Today's economy fails to meet everyone's needs. Nearly 60% of US employers lament the unpreparedness of jobseekers, even for basic roles. Additionally, over 3 million young people are disengaged, neither working nor in school.
A US Department of Labor grant to Junior Achievement USA is funding a historic and visionary initiative: the creation of a new program for JA, JA Workforce Coaching. The Federal grant, Workforce Coaching for Youth, will lead to a national rollout over the next three years, expanding JA’s reach into the young adult/workforce space. The initiative targets young adults ages 16-21 who may be at-risk of not graduating and/or unemployed.
JA USA is developing a three-pillar approach to the workforce space. Those pillars are: Coaching, Credentialing, and Connections to Employment.
Coaching
Through personalized one-on-one coaching sessions, participants receive support in aligning their interests, skills, and needs with employment opportunities. The program includes:
- One four-hour coach training session followed by 12 individual coaching sessions
- Guiding participants toward suitable job placements or career-focused educational programs
- Participants aged 16 to 21 develop personalized action plans, gain access to employer databases, receive assistance in creating professional online profiles and resumes, and connect with various employment opportunities.
Credentialing
The growing emphasis on skills-based hiring informs JA’s credentialing strategy. There are three types of credentialing initiatives:
- Credentials created and issued by JA, e.g. the JA Career-Ready Credential
- Partnerships with third-party organizations that offer pathways to credentialing, including credential prep programs.
- A partnership with Accredible making all badges portable, which is facilitated by the issuance of a digital credential, stored in a wallet.
Connections to Employment
JA Workforce Coaching features a variety of support aligned to career readiness, as well as obtaining actual work experience.
The local JA Areas’ connections to employers is one of the strongest aspects of JA’s work in this space. Leveraging those relationships will help ensure employment opportunities are available for program participants.
